The Holsteiner breed of horses originated in
the Schleseig-Holstein province of Grmany in
the 1200s. The horses were originally bred
by monks at a monastery named Uetersen in
Germany,
Holsteiners were highly valued by farmers
for their strength and steady behavior. The
monastic tradition of Holsteiner breeding
was transferred to private landowners around
the time of the Reformation when monastery
properties were transferred to private
landowners.
Understanding the value of maintaining the
breed, the private landowners continued in
the Holsteiner traditions originally set
forth by the monks of Uetersen.
In 1686, laws were established in the
Schleswig-Holstein province, to insure and
protect the quality of the breed. Over the
next two centuries, the solid reputation of
the Holsteiner breed flourished through
Europe and beyond. The military depended on
the Holsteiners’ courage, strength, and
steadiness. Over 10,000 Holsteiner horses
were exported in the year 1797.
At the turn of the 20th Century, British
Yorkshire Coach horses and Cleveland Bay
stallions were used to produce a
high-stepping carriage horse. By the end of
World War II, the carriage horse
Thoroughbred blood was introduced to the
Holsteiner breed, which resulted in enhanced
jumping and a refinement in driving ability.
Nowadays, Holsteiners routinely finish in
the top standings of international
equestrian competitions, including the
Olympic Games and World Championships. You
will find that the Holsteiner horses of
today are well-suited for jumping, dressage,
driving, and eventing. |
